Knots and Fields: a documentary

Knots and Fields, a documentary of 75 mins in length, looks at the history and the contemporary relevance of the famous Summer Courses in New Music, which have been held in Darmstadt, Germany since 1946.

The film includes interviews with many significant figures from, and witnesses to the courses’ history, including composers Pierre Boulez, Helmet Lachenmann and Brian Ferneyhough; the first student to enrol in 1946, Hans Ulrich Engelmann; Dr. Otto Tomek, the radio producer who was a regular visitor during the 50s and 60s; and three of the five directors of that courses have had during their 65 year history.
